SQUEEGEE BANDIT COMES CLEAN IN EUGENE
New Zealand documentary film SQUEEGEE BANDIT returns to DIVA gallery for screenings Friday Jan. 23 and Saturday Jan. 24 at 7pm. DIVA and Laughing Matters have brought the film back in response to demand for more showings after Squeegee Bandit screened as part of the Eugene Celebration Film Festival in September.
Director Sándor Lau, who now resides in Eugene, will attend and answer questions after the screenings.
Squeegee Bandit tells the story of Starfish, a Maori man who survives by washing car windows at intersections on the mean streets of South Auckland, New Zealand. The film follows Starfish’s struggles through nine months, three cars, two women, thirty residences, three weeks of homelessness, a hundred run-ins with the cops, one court date, a kilo of marijuana, a closet full of skeletons, finding God and the Zen of window washing.
Squeegee Bandit is the winner of several awards, including an Air New Zealand
Screen Award (NZ's Oscars) and has played in film festivals in seven countries.
The film was released theatrically in New Zealand and earned four-star reviews
from New Zealand’s largest newspapers, the New Zealand Herald and Sunday Star-Times.
"I wanted to tell a small, intimate, story of one man’s life to tell a
big story about sin and redemption and the human soul. With everything I do,
I try to craft characters so the audience can see themselves in the people on
screen," says the director. Lau, who went to New Zealand to attend film school
as a US Fulbright Scholar, stayed seven years and has recently returned to the
US. Mr. Lau has been a resident of Eugene since 2007.
Admission $5 at the door. DIVA is at 110 W. Broadway.

Producer, Director Deb McManman set Katina and fellow actor, Greg Black, loose to improvise their way through scenes playing all the characters in the video. What do these hard hitting issues have to do with you? A lot! These are the very issues that destroy a thriving community from the inside out. Where do these problems come from? How do we address what is hidden?
Improvise World Peace is a workshop that is designed to allow people to look into themselves in a non-confrontational format and to discern the roots of pre-judgement. What causes us to avoid a person before we take the time to get to know them? How do other people see you? What type of "messages" are you sending?
Improvise World Peace uses theatre games and exercises to stimulate dialogue around hidden issues. Groups work together to playfully uncover the sources of prejudice. This is a fun and lively way to make discoveries about alienation and "otherness".
